Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. This checker compares heights and ratings only. It does not check jack-point compatibility or ground conditions.

Quick answer

Scissor jack lift height has to clear two numbers. First, the jack’s closed height must fit under the jack point with the tire flat. Second, its maximum height must reach that gap plus the lift you need. Enter your measurements below to check 13 scissor jacks with listed specs, or check your own jack.

How to use the scissor jack height checker

  1. Pick your units: inches and pounds, or millimeters and kilograms.
  2. Choose which jacks to check: the listed scissor jacks, the listed low-profile floor jacks, all of them, or “My own jack”.
  3. Enter the clearance at the jack point with the tire flat. This is the distance from the ground to the jack point your owner’s manual shows, measured on level ground before anything is lifted.
  4. Enter the extra lift needed. This is how far the body must rise to get the wheel off the ground. A practical helper is to measure ground-to-fender height on the inflated corner of the same axle and subtract the same measurement on the flat corner. Then add any extra you want for fitting the spare.
  5. Enter the vehicle weight from the door-jamb label or owner’s manual, plus a margin. The default margin of 1.00 means no extra allowance. It is not a safety recommendation, because the jack maker’s rating and manual govern. If you leave the weight blank, the rating check is skipped and results show heights only.
  6. If you choose “My own jack”, enter its closed height and max height. If you enter a rated capacity, you must also pick its unit exactly as the manual states it. The checker shows an error next to the unit field until you do.

You can take every measurement from the side of the car with a tape measure. Do not reach or lie under the vehicle to measure.

The formula: fit under, reach and rating

The checker runs three comparisons and gives one of three results:

  • PASS: all three checks were run and all are true.
  • Height OK, rating not checked: the jack fits under and reaches, but you left out the weight (or, for your own jack, the rating), so the capacity was not compared. This is not a pass.
  • FAIL: at least one check failed. The checker shows the shortfall in your chosen unit.
  • Required max height = clearance at jack point + extra lift
  • Fits under: closed height ≤ clearance (shortfall = closed height − clearance)
  • Reaches: max height ≥ required max height (shortfall = required max − max height)
  • Rating: rated capacity ≥ vehicle weight × margin

Internally, all values are converted to millimeters and kilograms using exact definitions: 1 in = 25.4 mm, 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, 1 short ton = 2,000 lb and 1 metric tonne = 1,000 kg.

Example: the clearance is 4 in, the extra lift is 10 in and the vehicle weighs 3,500 lb.

Listed jack (min–max, capacity)Fits under 4 in?Reaches 14 in?Rated ≥ 3,500 lb?Result

4.125–15.125 in, 3,000 lbNo (0.13 in short)YesNoFAIL

With the weight left blank, the first two jacks would show “Height OK, rating not checked” instead of PASS or FAIL.

Will a scissor jack fit under my car?

It depends on the closed height. Among the 13 scissor jacks with full listed specs, the stated minimum heights run from 3.18 in to 4.33 in, and the maximum heights run from 13.19 in to 17.17 in. With a flat tire, the gap at the jack point can be smaller than many drivers expect. If no listed scissor jack passes your height checks, the checker shows how many of the 17 low-profile floor jacks with listed specs do, based on the shelf snapshot of September 27, 2026.

Coverage is limited. We checked 30 car scissor jack listings from a 45-row shelf, after removing motorcycle lifts and RV stabilizers. Only 13 stated capacity in pounds plus both heights without contradicting themselves. For low-profile floor jacks, 17 of 43 shelf rows qualified. Bottle jacks (2 usable of 16) and standard floor jacks (1 usable) had fewer than 3 usable rows, so those groups are omitted; use “My own jack” to check one.

Electric and drill-driven scissor jacks are not in this dataset, because 0 of the 45 shelf scissor jacks were of either kind.

Watch the word “ton”. Some listings mean US short tons (2,000 lb), while others print “3 ton” next to “6600 lbs”, which means metric tonnes. The checker never assumes which one is meant, so confirm the unit in the jack’s manual.

Methodology & sources

We read each jack’s capacity, minimum height and maximum height from its marketplace listing (title, feature bullets or spec block) on October 12, 2026. A row was used only if all three values were stated, capacity was given in pounds, and no field on the page contradicted another. Rows with missing values or contradictions were excluded. The figures are the sellers’ own claims, and we have not verified them. For scissor jacks, the table below names the listing fields that state each height. For low-profile floor jacks, the specific field was not recorded in our review, and the table says so.

ASME’s PASE standard covers portable automotive service equipment, including automotive jacks and stands. We cite it by name and scope only. For context, a 1998 NHTSA research note using CPSC injury data from 1994-95 (old data) states: “Approximately three-fourths (74%) of the persons injured in motor vehicle jack failures were injured as a result of being struck by the vehicle as it fell from the jack.”

FAQ

Will a scissor jack fit under my car with a flat tire?

It fits only if the jack’s closed (minimum) height is at or below the gap between the ground and the jack point with the tire flat. Measure that gap on level ground and compare it with the jack maker’s listed minimum height.

How high does a scissor jack need to lift?

The jack’s maximum height must be at least the flat-tire clearance plus the extra lift you need to get the wheel off the ground. The checker adds the two and compares the total with the jack’s listed maximum height.

What does ‘1.5 ton’ mean on a jack listing?

It is not always clear. Some listings mean US short tons (2,000 lb) and others mean metric tonnes (1,000 kg, about 2,204.6 lb), so the checker asks you to pick the unit and you should confirm it in the jack’s manual.

Does a PASS mean the jack is safe for my car?

No. PASS only means the heights and the rated capacity compare favorably with your numbers; if you leave out the weight or rating, the result is ‘Height OK, rating not checked’, not PASS. The jack maker’s rating and manual govern, and you should never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.

Are electric or drill-driven scissor jacks included?

No. None of the 45 scissor jacks on our shelf snapshot were electric or drill-driven, so they are not in the dataset; you can still check one with the ‘My own jack’ option.
